"Uni-TV" - Distributed TV Productions and Video-on-Demand Services at Universities

The availability of wide area networks with transmission capacities of several Gigabit-per-second (Gbit/s) is able to tremendously change the methods used for teaching and learning at universities: Audio-visual didactic material which is produced and presented as TV-productions, will be accessible to group studies as well as individual studies via networks. The increasing use of high resolution video signals and the simultaneous access of many students to such bandwidth-intensive material require a high-performance network infrastructure within the Gigabit-per-second range.

"Uni-TV" is an application project of the Gigabit Testbed South which is promoted by the DFN Association and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMB+F). University lectures are produced for TV and made available across university networks and at home. As part of cooperation project between the universities of Erlangen (RRZE) and Munich (TU/LRZ) lectures are recorded with television cameras and edited online at the Institute for Broadcasting (IRT) with the support of the Bayerische Rundfunk (BR). The book for the film is supplied by the University for Television and Film (HFF) in Munich. This kind of production requires a very high quality of service in the network which is not available yet in the current Broadband-Reserach-Network (B-WiN) in Germany. The Gigabit-Testbed South offers such network qualities for the first time and makes them available in a sufficient amount. The finished product is used on the educational channel of the Bayerische Rundfunk and can also be accessed "on demand" at universities through their data networks.
